Chuck E. Cheese San Jose is the largest location of the Chuck E. Cheese's restaurant and entertainment chain founded in 1977. The establishments are known for having a sit-down pizza restaurant, amusement rides, animatronic shows and arcade games. Other features (depending on location) can also have climbing equipment, tubes and slides (which are aimed at young children for the most part).

Background[]

The franchise's first location opened on May 17, 1977 as Chuck E. Cheese's Pizza Time Theatre on 370 S Winchester Blvd. in the Town & Country Village shopping center. This site was closed in February 1985, following the parent company's merger with ShowBiz Pizza Place, and was superseded by the current site (the third in the area) at 2445 Fontaine Road next to Tully Road in San Jose, California.[1][2] This facility has three floors (of which two are open to the public) and features animatronic shows and arcade games, which run on tokens. The exterior features a 30-foot Chuck E. Cheese statue that faces the 101 Freeway.[3]

Early history[]

The current building was originally built around 1974 as the Magic Village Toy Store but soon went out of business. It had been operating as a discotheque when the site was acquired to be converted to the new Chuck E. Cheese's. The third floor was rumored to be haunted by the ghost of a girl who had fallen to her death from there.[4] That floor is presently used by the Chuck E. Cheese management for storage.[3] The giant toy soldier statues that previously adorned the site are now at the Children's Museum of Stockton.
