Background[]
The construction to the Raleigh Mall in Beckley, West Virginia began in 1972-1973 and was completed several years later. It contained three anchor stores: Murphy Mart, Stone and Thomas, and Montgomery Ward.
Once the anchor store Montgomery Ward closed its doors in 2001 the mall quickly declined into a ghost town, with the last remaining anchor store being Stone and Thomas. The mall went over several changes but ultimately in 2011, most of the mall was demolished and so ended the Raleigh Mall.
Tilt is a chain of arcade centers that can be found in malls across the United States, including this one. It was located at the end of the mall next to Montgomery Ward on the right side.
The outside of the arcade was blue, with the logo of "Tilt" in red. The interior of the arcade was two shades of blue. The lower half of the wall was covered in dark blue carpet, and the upper half painted the same color blue as the outside. The arcade was always dark with very little lighting with the exception of the lights from the arcade and pinball machines. Tilt usually had a decent crowd until the decline of the Raleigh Mall which began in the early 90s due to mismanagement of the mall itself. Eventually Tilt closed and was re-opened as "Hot Shots", which was mostly made up of Pool Tables with around 10-15 arcade machines located in the front section. Hot Shots relocated to the middle of the mall shortly after and remained open for a few years.
