The Royal Coach Inn (also known as the Dunfey Hotel) is a motor inn located on 1770 S. Amphlett Boulevard in San Mateo, California.
Background[]
The hotel was originally established in the 1960s as part of the Royal Coach Inn chain and was later operated by Dunfey Hotels.[1] In August 1983, the hotel hosted Apple Computer's first Independent Software Developers Conference, predecessor to the Worldwide Developers Conference.[2]
Renovation[]
In June 1997, an $18 million renovation project commenced to reconstruct the Dunfey Hotel in San Mateo as The Regency Plaza Hotel, under ownership by Tarsadia Hotels.[3] The site is now operated by Marriott Hotels & Resorts as the San Mateo Marriott.
The arcade[]
The hotel is thought to have had an arcade, but the room is no longer in use as such.
Current status[]
The San Mateo Marriott and the Anaheim Majestic Garden Hotel next to Disneyland are the only former Royal Coach Inns remaining that have not been demolished or destroyed by fire. Some comparisons of their current state:
- The locations currently have completely different owners.
- The San Mateo location has been remodeled in a Spanish villa style, while the Disneyland location still retains its original Tudor castle-like exterior.
- The rear of the property is larger in San Mateo, while the rear at the Disneyland location has become smaller due to the opening of the Disney California Adventure park expansion in 2001.
- The Anaheim Majestic Garden Hotel is located behind "It's a Small World" of Disneyland park, causing it to get visibly hazy when there are fireworks being launched from the area.
